The next time you decide to ask your friend to help out with something at 3:25am in the morning, make sure she’s not a talented artist who happens to know that the extra “e” is the difference between Sunny Ade and Bruce Onobrakpeya.
Artiste (the one with the “e”)
This is everyone that makes music, performs it or entertains. An artiste can also be a professional dancer. Kaffy is an artiste (put some respek on that woman’s name). Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and “your favourite boy Tekno” are all artistes. Some might argue that producers are artistes— Sarz and E Kelly are fine example of such and points in case.
Artist (the one without an “e”)
Here’s a perfect summation by some article I read on Medium—
An artist paints, draws, sculpts, makes a film or is skilled with something involving perception and the use of their hands. Because writing used to be done by longhand, writers and poets are also known as artists.

Further examples are Bruce Onobrakpeya (earlier mentioned), Demas Nwoko, Anthony Azekwoh, Aina Onabolu, the woman who inspired this article at 3:25am, me (because I wrote this) and the million others out there who don’t get enough credit for being artists.
