Nigerian Afro-pop Singer and Songwriter, Cheque, has today released his latest project titled Chequemate. The 6-track EP marks his third project since breaking into the scene in 2020 with the infectious single, Zoom from his Razor EP. His debut album Bravo dropped a year later, featuring collaborations with fellow superstars Ayra Starr, Fireboy, Jackboy, and veteran rapper Olamide.
On Chequemate, Superboy delves deeper into his trap music and Hip-Hop influences. He also enlists Fireboy DML and Crayon, two of Nigeria’s most melodious singers to create moments of Afro-pop brilliance.
The EP begins with the motivational track “Shine,” incorporating traditional Hip-Hop sounds to deliver an uplifting message. Similarly, on the Fireboy-assisted “Hustler,” both artists reflect on their journey to success. Notably, the duo had previously collaborated on the hit track “History” from Cheque’s debut album, Bravo.
“Way Too Young” is an ode to youthful energy and features brilliant production from Ozedikus. On “LPD,” which stands for “Louis (Vuitton), Prada, and Dior,” Cheque exudes braggadocious vibes with edgy delivery and confidence-laced lyrics. “Sunflawa,” featuring Crayon, is the only pre-released single on the EP, where the duo croon about their love interest over a classic Afro-pop backdrop. The project concludes with “God Bless Me,” where Cheque embraces his essential trap music element.
“Chequemate” shines as yet another brilliant showcase of the artist’s talent, effortlessly blending emo/trap nuances to create a one-of-a-kind Afropop masterpiece. Listen here
