This week, we open the chapter on a fast-rising star named Akinola Akin, popularly known by his stage name “Whoisakin”. A musician with an inexplicably serene voice and really expressive lyrics, Whoisakin is an artiste to be reckoned with.

Released in April 2020, Whoisakin gets his discography off to a running start with Full Moon Weekends, his debut EP. With Full Moon Weekends, Whoisakin shows us his unique skill and distinct ability to express himself on various sounds on this five-track EP, a perfect blend of RnB and Fuji. From “Magic”, featuring the amazing and super talented Olayinka Ehi, to “+234”, to “Space” (a personal favorite), to “2:25” and finally, to “Energy”, we can definitely say Whoisakin already has “create a timeless EP” ticked off his bucket list. What makes the project even more beautiful is how each song is perfectly intertwined and blends into each other, then before you know it, you’re in the last 10 seconds of the last song.

“With Full Moon Weekends…we can definitely say Whoisakin already has “create a timeless EP” ticked off his bucket list.”

“Full Moon Weekends is just me making music that feels like the night. I’ve always loved long ass late night drives with no real destination, just vibes and some 2000 RnB classics. Or probably somewhere in my balcony, late night with a glass of wine, staring at the moon and playing music while the night breeze is blowing sha. Lol yeah, I wanted the music to feel that way so yeah”.

On how his journey to music began, he shares a similar origin story to a lot of music greats on the outside, but he does not consider that his real push. “Lol what got me into music? Don’t wanna say church or sumn like that because yeah I used to play drums in church, and, like, my dad plays music all the time at home, but that’s not really the reason. Lmao I swear I don’t know really, Probably my high school friends because we was always debating music all the time. If it’s not football, then it’s music so yeah. But on a professional level lol, it was Don Eazi. Lol I can still remember my first proper recorded song! Wanted to sound like him sooo bad 😂😂 but yeah.”

Talking about who the “Akin” in “Whoisakin” is, This pure Lagos guy describes himself as a “normal low-key guyman, working on the low so the doinzz go loud when its time”.

Only the musician can define his music, so on his genre, WhoisAkinn says, Genre? Lol I really don’t know. I just know it’s night vibes mostly, hmmm I’d probably find a name like banku or palmwine music. But yeah, n*ggas say it’s elite afro RnB. Others say it alte RnB, whatever RnB is sha involved”.

“If the beat is sent to me by the producer personally, if I don’t have a melody in my head in 20secs, Omo fashi, the beat ain’t for me”

On his creative process, he has quite the interesting path. “Lmao just a bottle of red wine and yeah, I go off or not. But it depends really, it’s the feels for me. Most times, I feel some type of way and I express it by playing melodies on the keyboard or the fl studio, and then I hum something to it and create scenarios that actually happened to me, if I’m in that bag atm, or I just vibe random vibes uno, then send to the producer and that’s it. But if the beat is sent to me by the producer personally, if I don’t have a melody in my head in 20 secs, Omo fashi, the beat ain’t for me”.

Asked about his aspirations in the music industry and artistes he would love to work with in the near future, Whoisakin lists some of his favourites. “Abroad? Defs Yo Trane, Ryan Trey, Brent Faiyaz, Drake, lol lots of them. The new RnB boys especially! And at home? Don Eazi, Jilex Anderson, Wani, Wande Coal, Melvitto! Ah and Burna!”

Going by how great of a job Whoisakin did already on Full Moon Weekends, we have no doubts that the coming doinzz will really be loud. It may have been a full moon weekend already, but we are confident the sun is just rising on Whoisakin’s music journey.
